TIRED.

Hell YEAH it's 11pm and I've been at school since 7:30am working on my brief. I'm leaving in one hour to get six big fat hours of sleep and then hightail it back here tomorrow. Our brief has to be 25 pages, plus all the tables and appendices and whatnot. I have read at least 9.3 million pages of cases, law reviews, briefs, and rules, and I have produced exactly four and one half pages of written product, three of which are utter crap. Tomorrow is going to suck ass. Seriously.

And I lost my student ID card which is what lets me ride the bus for free. Awesome.

Stream of CRAP

The latest missive from Whorebag "He Married Me For My Money And I Know It But I Don't Care Because I'm A Moron" Spears is up on her website. I have no words for how completely idiotic she is. Boy Brit, I bet those tabloid magazines feel bad now about their behavior...you sure told them! GO YOU! What a dumbass. Why is she so dumb? Why does she get to be a total dipshit and still make kajillions of dollars? It's a cruel world I tell 'ya.

P.S. Hey Brit, People Magazine wishes you would pretend that you've never met...kind of like how you feel about Fred Durst.

STREAM OF CONSCIOUSNESS
March 30, 2005
Dear False Tabloids,

As you read this letter, I bet you are asking yourself: Who? Who, me? Am I a false tabloid? Well, I don't know. But after this posting, I hope you are asking yourself a lot of questions. Your employees are a reflection of your magazine. Do you, Us Weekly, In Touch, Star and other desperate magazines want employees who are honest, or those who are liars? It seems to me that you'd prefer the latter. I'm really concerned about the people you hire to work at your companies. I'd like them to ask themselves the question, "What am I lying to myself about?" Is it that you are 50 pounds overweight? Is it that your children aren't making wise decisions? Or is it maybe that your husband or boyfriend is cheating on you? Until you face what is going on in your life, I guess you'll remain a false tabloid.

Britney

P.S. People Magazine is great in my book!

What do I win?

I got my 50,000 visitor today...boy, I never thought that would happen. Sure, THL did it in about 1/10 the time, but why should I let that get me down, after all, she's funny and smart and had the foresight to put in "Hot" in her title...no reason to hate. If I had called this site Hot Law Student Who Will Work For Favorable Dicta, I would have probably gotten 50,000 hits in like two weeks too.

Anyhow, not sure who the lucky visitor was, but I've narrowed it down to someone from Massachusets and Fitz, and since I know Fitz, I'm giving him the prize. The "prize" is, of course, well...nothing. But if he ever gets to the TVPNM I'll buy him a beer or something.

And only 15 days until this blog turns ONE YEAR OLD...who'da thunk it?

Friday Spies ©

Friday Spies, brought to you once again by the fabulous Men of BTQ (when does the calendar come out boys?).

1. Have you ever been in a car wreck?

Unfortunately yes. I was in two with my first husband, but he was driving both times. The only one I was in where I was driving was in Florida when I was in the Air Force. I was waiting behind a long line of people that were *all* waiting behind a guy who was trying to make a left turn across two lanes of oncoming traffic. So, we're all sitting there, and I glance in my rearview mirror and see this woman, on her cell phone, barrel through the green light (the speed limit was 40 m.p.h. and she was doing at least that), and she didn't even look up to see that traffic was stopped. She hit me without ever putting her brakes on. Because I saw her coming, my foot was on the brake, but I still hit the guy in front of me, who hit the guy in front of him, and three cars behind her slammed into her and each other. I was driving an almost brand new Saturn SC2 (the three door coupe), and after I gathered my senses and got out of the car, I saw that it looked a bit like a beer can that someone had smashed from both ends. I was in uniform or I would have pulled her out of her car and punched her right in the face.

The best part is that, although my car needed nearly $10,000 in repairs, AND the woman was cited for causing the accident, I was unable to have my car declared totaled, because, according to the insurance people, they wouldn't total it out unless the damage was at least 80% of the value of the car. The car was, of course, brand new...like two months old, and so they repaired it. I kept it until I came to law school, and it was a great car, but I never thought I got a very fair deal with that situation.

2. Sunrise or sunset?

Sunset. It's romantic, and sunsets have THE best light ever for making everyone look all beautiful and warm and glow-y. Sunsets are for rolling up the legs of your jeans, strolling along the agate beach at Patrick's Point State Park in Crescent City, CA, picking up beautiful multi-colored agates, and then sitting down on a piece of smooth sea-tumbled driftwood for some good old fashioned necking while the sun goes down.

3. If you could change, amend, delete, or pass one law, what would it be?

Hmmmm. This is a hard one. I would probably make laws MUCH more harsh for people who abuse animals. And kids.

Also, I would make January 11th Jimmy Buffett Appreciation Day and he would have to give a free concert in the city I was living in and everyone in the country would get the day off of work and a tax refund in the form of a plane ticket to come see him...and the margaritas would flow freely and there would be peace upon the earth.

4. What is your favorite single article of clothing?

Right now it is a red sweatshirt I got in D.C. last summer that says....uh..."Washington D.C." on it. I love it and wear it so often that people always joke that if I'm not wearing it they don't recognize me. I also love this one pair of pajama pants I have that are green and say "Kiss Me I'm Irish" across the ass. I wear those pretty much anytime I'm at home. When I was married I loved my husband's t-shirts because they always smelled like him. When he would go away on TDY I would make him wear a couple in the days before he left and then leave them behind and I would wear them to bed every night so I would still feel like he was there.

5. If you could/had to spend the day hanging out with another blogger(one you don't already know), who would it be and what would you do?

This is another hard question. I have already met AI, I will (hopefully) get a chance to meet Scott this summer...I think I would probably most like to meet Soupie, followed closely by Larry, Fitz, and NDC. I actually would love to meet everyone so I feel bad naming names, but I think these four represent the bloggers I interact with the most and that know the most about me in terms of things I don't put on the blog.

I think Soup and I would probably be forced to go out drinking together where we would no doubt cuss like sailors, tell dirty jokes, and drunk dial all the rest of the people on this list.

So Saddddd....

Oh man people, I wrote the awesomest drunken post last night and Blogger ate it, I'm so sad I can't share it with you. It didn't even save it back in the Blogger "draft" setting where posts sometimes go even when you think they're gone. I thought it was because I was so trashed, but apparently everyone was having trouble with Blogger last night.

It was so nice to get out and relax a little bit, although I think I got into some much more heated conversations than I normally would without the booze. I was all impassioned last night about a multitude of things....things I'm not sure I'm even going to get into because I'll be all riled up again, but suffice it to say a couple people from school really pissed me off. Today I have to start my HUGE appellate brief so I'm off to sit in the library for the next three days, and possibly all night Sunday since it's due on Monday at noon. I am supremely thankful that I don't seem to be hungover and that I got to blow off some steam before heading back into the library.

UPDATE: I will be putting up Friday Spies later...I think I'll do it for a study break later today.

SA-TUR-DAY NIGHT!

OK, really it's THURSDAY NIGHT but I have still been doing some drinking. Also, I am about to go out and do some more drinking. Mmmmmm...beer....and hopefully some nice manflesh to ogle. I heart ogling.

YAY BEER!

I am not even thinking of the 25 page appellate brief I have due on Monday that is, as yet, unresearched, unwritten, and uh....unthunk.

B...E...E...R!!!

Is it Friday yet?

Have you ever just been happily highlighting away only to realize that the book you're marking up is borrowed and doesn't belong to you? Yeah...uh...me neither.

I have school all day and then I have to go to a meeting for this stupid Committee I got myself mixed up in on main campus. If ever there was an advertisement for the idea that meetings are big, fat, wastes of time and that having a committee with no clear purpose or goal is just an exercise in painfulness for all involved (except the one dippy leader), this particular committee woud be the prime example. And the meetings always last like 3 hours with absolutely no direction at all...generally by the second hour I have totally lost my patience both with the undergrad rep's and with the "leader" and am snapping away at everyone.

BUUUUUT, M. will be here for one day next week on her way somewhere else...YAY! I'm so excited. She's going to stay with me Wed. night, then go to school with me Thurs, then BEER...and then, since she was smart enough to marry a guy from Hawaii, her and K. get to go to Hawaii for about 10 days and have a honeymoon of sorts. Jealous!!

Oh yay, more bitching about the quarter system.

I second LQ's emotion. With a quarter system, when classes are four (or five) days a week...and nearly all classes meet every day, it is unrealistic to expect students to read 60-80 pages a night (the last three nights the Admin Law homework by itself has taken me 5+ hours) in each class. That is upwards of 200 pages a night (and 15 hours?). If we only had each class twice a week, that would be one thing, or if we only had one or two classes per day...but we don't. It's the third day of class and I'm already burned out and behind.

When I was in the Air Force I got an opportunity to speak to a 3-star General once about my job (I was briefing him on a program I ran). He told me I should never be afraid to close my door and put my feet up on my desk and just *think*. In fact, he told me it was part of my job to think about things, because being a good leader means understanding what is going on around you and being able to have a comprehensive view of the issues involved in your job and the people you manage.

And you know, it worked for me in the Air Force. I was a good officer and I think, for the most part, I did a good job with the resources that I had. I *know* that I had a solid grasp on an amount of information that was positively voluminous (if you've ever seen military regulations you know this is true). I won't bore you with the details of my job, but I was in charge of a LOT of programs, including substantive legal work, for nearly 6,000 people worldwide. So, I don't suppose there is an argument that what I'm learning in law school is too complex for me or that I am not used to stress. Believe me, having a full Colonel screaming at you in a staff meeting because HE messed something up and calling you incompetent in front of 25 people is pretty stressful.

The quarter system is so intense that there is no time for rumination. No time to discuss, think, synthesize, assimilate, or comprehend on any but the most basic level. Do some people manage to do it? Apparently yes. Maybe they don't spend an hour a day blogging, or are just more organized or smarter than me. There is an argument here though, I think, that having most all of your classes four (or five) days a week, three or four or five classes a quarter, and having to read 50+ pages for each class each night, does not allow students the time to process the information properly. Is it really any wonder I am so overwhelmed all the time? I feel like my life is about reading a huge number of pages each night so I can say "Yes professor, I read X,Y, and Z"...but most of the time I have no idea what the deeper thread of meaning is underlying the very basic details gleaned from one hurried read-through.

I have to quit bitching now though because I still have eighteen million pages to read for tomorrow.

Dear Diary

Dear Diary,

Today was very special to me. In my Admin Law class the professor spent nearly 15 minutes clarifying his expectations for us because "some people" yesterday seemed like they didn't really understand what he wanted. Even though he didn't say my name I am so happy to know he was thinking of me. Knowing that people expect me to be incompetent, and having those expectations rewarded, is dreamy.

I am still a little bit worried about where I will live this summer. Diary, is it normal for men renting out houses to say they don't have a room they think you'll be interested in but they wish they knew your real name instead of the pseudonym you registered under at roommates.com? Also, do you think that for $800 a month I should expect more than a futon on the floor of some guy's den? Hmmmm...I don't know. I'm kind of excited to think that after living at one of these lovely establishments for the summer I might end up famous, I just hope I get a cut of the hidden webcam profits.

Also, I still hate you-know-who and think that one guy is hot. That is all.

Coalition for Darfur

[This is part of the weekly series written by the authors over at Coalition for Darfur, and posted by bloggers who are part of the Coalition...like me. If you want more information, head on over there and read about what you can do to help.]

Never Again: Again and Again

In her 2001 article Bystanders to Genocide, Pulitzer Prize winning author Samantha Power recounts how President Clinton was shocked and outraged by an article written by Philip Gourevitch recounting the horrors of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, prompting him to send the article to his national security advisor Sandy Berger with a note scrawled in the margin reading "Is what he's saying true? How did this happen?"

After taking office, President Bush reportedly read Power's article on the Clinton administration's failure to intervene during the genocide. He too scrawled a message in the margin - "NOT ON MY WATCH."

Yet we are now faced with another African genocide, this time in Darfur, and the United States and the rest of the world are responding exactly as they did during Rwanda - with paralyzed inaction.

Though there are many key differences between what is taking place in Darfur and what occurred in Rwanda a decade ago, there are also many similarities.

In 1993, the world watched "Schindler's List" and wondered how such horrors could unfold and why they were not stopped. In 2004, it watched "Hotel Rwanda" and asked the same questions. In each case, those questions went unanswered.

Just as in Rwanda, the international military force on the ground in Darfur is far too small, poorly equipped and operating under an extremely limited mandate that does not allow them to protect civilians at risk.

Just as in Rwanda, the genocide is taking place against a backdrop of "civil war," leading the international community to focus more on establishing a cease-fire than protecting those being killed. Just as in Rwanda, the death toll is nearly impossible to determine.

Just as in Rwanda, the United Nations is more or less paralyzed as individual nations seek to protect their own national interests rather than helpless men, women and children.

Just as in Rwanda, media coverage is almost nonexistent, Congress is all but silent, and the human rights community is having difficulty getting the nation to pay attention to a genocide in progress.

Just as in Rwanda, a genocide is unfolding - but this time it ishappening on our watch.

We ask you to join the Coalition forDarfur as we attempt to raise awareness of the genocide in Darfur and raise money for the live saving work Save the Children is doing there.

Just Because: Chris Evans

I don't really have any idea who this dude is (apparently he is going to be in the movie "The Fantastic Four" which I didn't even know was being made because I never go to movies because I am in law school so basically my life sucks), but F&D sent me the link (through The Superficial) and he does have some pretty rockin' abs...so you know, instant eye candy.

It's just like there was no Spring Break.

This morning started out with me getting cold called, full-on Socratic style, in Admin Law. In my head I went "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" but in real life I tried to answer the question only to sound like a complete and utter moron. So that was fun.

I also had my first class today in Terrorism and Law. Good: It's unique, timely, interactive, small group seminar, interesting. Bad: There are gonna be some truly annoying people in there. I can just tell.

I am BUSY, it's so weird it's only the second day, I feel like (a) I didn't get a Spring Break at all which I guess is normal since it was only a week long and I spent the whole time writing almost, and (b) that I am as overwhelmed as I normally am probably 2/3 of the way through the quarter when I realize how far behind I am. Damn. It's gonna be a long quarter.

Anyhoo...I got a JB Boy suggestion submitted via email this morning, and I will attempt to get that posted tonight (I almost wrote "I will attempt to get it up tonight"...heh).

Odds 'N' Ends

Blogger is being so stupid. I had so many things to tell you and now I'm not sure I can remember everything...I hate Blogger for being slow. And dumb.

First, there is this commercial airing here that is so bizarre. Let me set the stage for you. The camera starts out on three attractive young girls, like high school senior age, and then pulls out and you can see they are all wearing what look like prom dresses. They take turns talking, and proceed to tell us, the viewers, that they are receptionists at this law "firm"...really a one man personal injury shop. The assure us that "Mike" is a great guy and would return your calls, unlike those BIG FIRM guys, and the reason he is so on top of everything is because THEY, young teenage girls, are enforcers and keep him on the right track. As the camera pulls all the way back you can see all three girls are standing on what *looks like* a large roll of white butcher paper that is suspended above their heads and rolls down behind them onto the floor...I'm sure it's a screen of some kind, but it looks cheap. You can see the edges of it and all the equipment and stuff on the sides. Then, they all stand there with big teenager-y grins and you hear the lawyers voice go "My Name is Mike Smith and I approved this ad." WHAT? The whole thing is weird and made me feel vaguely uncomfortable that he's employing a bunch of attractive girls who look 15 in his office. Blech.

Second, the commercials for Oprah tomorrow with Priscilla Presley? HOLY SHIT! She looks like a flesh eating cadaverous zombie. Seriously, her mouth is now a maw, a big cavernous yawning brain sucking machine. It's so awful. I'm going to try to find a picture later.

Third, on the news tonight they had a story about a guy whose roof fell in. The culprits? SWEAR TO GOD, the news guy said it was "Pesky mountain beavers." HAHAHAHAHA.

Fourth, damnit. I can't remember what else I was going to say. Oh well, NDC will be happy the list is even.

Fifth, oh yeah. I heard a commercial today that Fantasia, who won American Idol last year (right? I guess...I don't watch it), is going to be on Idol this week singing her new single..."Baby Momma." I have no words.

Sixth...just keeping it even.

I'm Bart, who the hell are you?

So, today was my first day of classes and guess what. In Professional Responsibility (hereinafter to be called "PR" cuz it's too long to keep writing), we watched The Simpsons. The one where Bart gets hit by Mr. Burns' car and the ambulance chaser lawyer convinces Homer to have Bart lie in court and pretend to be really hurt to get a million dollars. Anyway, it was fun and makes me think that at the very least the prof is going to be cool. Admin Law....uh....good prof, very engaging and energetic, and yet I see a Fed Courts type of situation in my future. I'm going to try SO HARD not to let that happen. Tomorrow I have Terrorism and Law, my one seminar class this quarter. Aside from that I'm doing an appellate advocacy competition, but that will be done in mid-April. I am SO glad this is the last quarter this year. I'm tired and I never feel like Spring Break is long enough to get all rested up...one week? PUH-LEAZE.

Does anyone know....

Does anyone know how much it costs to get jewelry appraised? I have decided (not that it was much of a decision) to sell my engagement and wedding rings (if I can). But, since my ex has all the paperwork, which is probably long gone by now, I am going to need to get it appraised. I figured I would clean them up, stick some pic's on Craigslist or Ebay or something, and try to make some money off of a bunch of jewelry that, while very shiny and sparkly, is doing me absolutely no good sitting in a tupperware container under my bathroom sink. I can sell them super cheap and still feel like I got something out of the bastard.

I've got my shoes tied tight...

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I am not ready to go back to school tomorrow. This is strike number 9,837 against the quarter system...a very short spring break. I just can't face it tomorrow. I'm not ready for classes and reading and papers and MORE EXAMS. GAH!

I did have a fab Easter dinner over at LQ's though. If I could eat chocolate cake all day instead of going back to school tomorrow everything would be fine.

I am happy to report there's an all new Desperate Housewives tonight. YAY! And I think that new show Gray's Anatomy looks pretty good too...so I might see if that's OK.

I'm hoping that after a good night's sleep the "OHMYGOD" panic of my summer situation is going to subside. I'm just a little too Type-A for my own good. I think I am really going to love my job, but I am sad it doesn't pay just a tiny bit more. Damn the government and their miniature pay scale...let's just hope the job is as cool as I would like (hope?) (want?) it to be.

Pictures

I had to rename all my pictures because all these stupid search engines were linking to them and sending all these crazy people to my site every day to see my manflesh pics, which was driving me crazy. And I think people were hotlinking too (linking directly to my pictures instead of posting pictures in their own sites), so I broke all the links. I will work on restoring the pictures in the upcoming weeks. Sorry.

Screw it

The bookstore opens up an hour early tomorrow...I can get my books at 8am, and then read before my first class at 9:30am. Right? RIGHT? I have decided it is against the best interests of my mental health to go down to the school today. I'm emotionally fragile (or whatever...really i just DON'T WANNA!!!!).

With that, it's back into the pj's for an afternoon planted in front of the TV. Whatever I said about getting ahead (or at least not getting behind) is null and void right now. Slackerhood calls.

Decisions Decisions

I am having stress over deciding where to live. I finally found a sublet that looks pretty good (in the pictures at least), it's in Silver Spring, MD, and the ONLY real problem with it is that I would have to ride a bus to the Metro, and then take the Metro to work. I realize that tons of people do this every day, but it's just more money that I have to spend (and time), and I'm afraid that I will feel isolated if I'm not closer to work. On the other hand, it's unrealistic to think that I can afford the prices in the city for apartments...I'm working for the government, not a firm, *and* I have to still pay my rent here in TVPNM all summer since I can't sublet (should have checked the lease...damnit).

What I'm saying is that by the time I pay rent in D.C. and rent here, and the bills I have to pay, I will have spent my entire paycheck every month. So food, fun stuff, and other living stuff, will all be coming out of my parent's pockets (unless I win the lottery or something). I'll be losing money this summer. Again.

Stress.

I am going to LQ's house for Easter dinner, and I have to go buy books today (since apparently it would kill our professors to all use the same books for the same classes, thereby allowing us to get used texts from our classmates). Looks like my Admin Law class is going to be this quarter's "Fed Courts." I'm vowing right now to keep up with it...shoot me if I get behind.

OK, enough histrionics for today. I gotta go for a bike ride and then do all my errands.
